Dr. Lauren Grant: Advancing the epidemiology of enteric illnesses: Multidisciplinary approaches needed
Lauren Grant, PhD (Population Medicine, University of Guelph) is an Assistant Professor and Epidemiologist. Her research program is broadly focused on modifiable determinants of population health with current foci in climate change and health, pet ownership and health, and prevention of enteric and zoonotic diseases. Her lab employs quantitative and qualitative approaches to generate evidence for improving population health and health equity in Canada.
Enteric illnesses are common in Canada. Each year, 1 in 8 Canadians are estimated to experience an episode of enteric illness. Most episodes are acute and resolve without need for medical care, making estimation of true burden of illness, identification of those most at risk, and measuring inequities challenging. Collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches that combine tools from epidemiology, social sciences, and natural and data sciences are needed to elucidate these common but largely invisible illnesses. In this talk, I will introduce you to the current epidemiology of enteric illnesses, highlighting shortcomings in the field, and discuss interdisciplinary paths forward.
