McMaster’s First Fully Collaborative Archaeological Field School

ANTHROP 3CC6: Collaborative Archaeological Field School
McMaster University presents in partnership with Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit
Sealey Village (AGHA-4)
With help and guidance from Indigenous friends and colleagues, we are thrilled to announce McMaster’s first fully collaborative archaeological field school at Sealey, an Attawandaron village site near Brantford, ON with links to Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe communities, as well as trade with the French.
Students will gain hands-on experience in the methods and techniques of archaeological excavation and artefact analysis, working and learning alongside Indigenous community members daily. Archaeological field and lab experiences will be relevant for work in academic and consultant archaeologies. Students will also have the unique opportunity to participate in hands-on foraging and stone and bone tool reproduction workshops. The activities and assessments in this course will emphasize co-learning, teaching and dialogue, working together to amplify Indigenous voices for an equitable Ontario archaeology. This represents a crucial opportunity for students to build allyship with communities underrepresented in archaeology, as well as make one-on-one connections with Indigenous community members and knowledge keepers.
