Dr. Bernice Downey

Dr. Bernice Downey, McMaster Anthropology Alum to be honoured tonight by the McMaster Alumni Association

Tonight, the McMaster Alumni Association will shine a light on the outstanding accomplishments of alumni during their annual awards ceremony. As part of the event, eight members of the McMaster community will be inducted into the Alumni Gallery for their contributions to the university and beyond. "Downey is driven to create change and says it’s why she chose a health profession. A mother and grandmother of Ojibwe and Celtic heritage, she received a BSc in nursing from the University of Ottawa then came to McMaster after gaining experience in the nursing field to pursue her masters, PhD and post-doctoral work in medical anthropology." - Alumni website

Recent McMaster Anthropology alumnus, Dr. Dorian Juric, has been granted three prestigious awards to fund various portions of his upcoming postdoctoral research. A Social Sciences and Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship will be bringing him to the University of Ottawa this summer, while a Harry Frank Guggenheim Distinguished Scholar Award and a Wenner Gren Post PhD Research Grant will be funding various aspects of his digital and in-person field work.

Dr. Juric’s forthcoming research is focused on longue durée historical and cultural formulations elicited in nativist aggression and anti-migrant folklore in a long-standing border region bridging the nations of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.
