Shalen Prado, PhD student & Sample Starch Grain

Graduate Residency in Digital Scholarship

PhD student Shalen Prado from the Department of Anthropology has recently been accepted as part of the Lewis & Ruth Sherman Centre for Digital Scholarship’s Graduate Residency Program.

Oct 20, 2020

As part of her doctoral research, Shalen will collate photos and information on microbotanical plant residues (e.g., phytoliths and starch grains) to build a functional online reference collection. This database will include photos taken by Shalen using a microscope camera, of modern and archaeological specimens processed at the McMaster Paleoethnobotanical Research Facility. Organized into an online database, this digital scholarship project will assist other archaeologists and paleoethnobotanists to identify microbotanical residues in the British Isles and Ireland, and Northern Europe more generally.
