Monks had their flesh ripped off before burial

Department of Anthropology recently defended PhD Robert Stark, findings from 1,000-year-old monastery in Sudan reveals the grisly ritual

McMaster University researchers have excavated four ancient cemeteries in Sudan. The skeletons were buried in odd positions with their legs at strange angles with cuts found on some of the bones, suggesting the monks had their flesh removed shortly after their death, but why this was done is unknown. Other noteable findings were stone structures that were found in all four cemeteries, engraved with Greek writings.
