New Course! The Black Death

ANTHROP 3BD3 - The Black Death Fall Term 2020, Tuesdays 2:30 to 4:20pm and Wednesdays 3:30 to 4:20pm

Aug 12, 2020

About 700 years ago an epidemic emerged somewhere in Western Asia and then spread across North Africa, the Middle East and into Europe, killing an estimated 30-40% of the population (about 50 million people). We refer to this pandemic as the infamous Black Death. Today, scholars from multiple disciplines study the Black Death to try and determine, what caused it, why it emerged, why did it kill so many people, did it kill some more than others, will it emerge again? ANTH 3BD3 will break down these disparate streams of evidence and reassemble them into a consilient history of the second pandemic of plague and relate it to our current ongoing COVID pandemic."
