Jacquie Fisher: Full Circle? How to Look at CRM Archaeology Through a Different Lens
Since leaving Mac, I have been working in the Cultural Resources Management (CRM) sector of the discipline. After working for various archaeological companies, I was part of a large engineering company’s team where I was director on various projects such as Highway 407 Central. In 1999, I set up my own company, Fisher Archaeological Consulting (FAC). I have directed all stages of field work and worked on numerous complex stratified sites such as Ne’bwaakah giizwed ziibi (Rivermouth Speaks) in Southampton, and historic ones elsewhere in the Province such as Dundurn Castle. Throughout my career I have been working with a number of First Nations, and that has provided me with a better understanding of the past, and actually how much I do not know.
Learning has always been a lifelong process, some take on more and greater challenges as we mature and age than others. History has always been taught as a generally linear concept, with events and people taking the stage and then exiting, never to be seen again. The Western perspective on time, history, nature, and the universe has masked or hidden other more holistic perspectives. This talk will examine how CRM, landscape archaeology in Ontario, and First Nations’ knowledges, specifically within Bruce County, have provided me with a different perspective, helping potentially to reduce our Western blinkers.
